Defence secretary Philip Hammond today placed a £1.1bn contract to power the Royal Navy’s next-generation submarines. The deal with Rolls-Royce will provide new reactor cores for the final Astute-class boat, HMS Ajax, as well as the first of the replacements for the Vanguard-class submarines which carry Britain’s ultimate weapon.

On 30 May members of the Ship’s Company from HMS Wildfire in Northwood went to new heights in pursuit of training. Instead of a normal Wednesday evening ‘drill night’ in the classroom, they set off for the sports centre at St John’s Beaumont School in Old Windsor.
